On Producer spotlight this month we are featuring one of the pioneers of the Australian music industry. Jase Beathedz has cemented himself as a pioneering beat architect not only in the Australian hip-hop scene but the Electronic Dance music scene as well.
Jase has been applying his skills in many ways for what seems like forever. A respected aerosol artists and beat maker, Jase’s work is always on the cutting edge.
With a plethora of releases under his belt on labels such as Nuffsaid and Obese, he was one of the original beat makers for a lot of the early Nuffsaid releases. Check out his release of the Nuffsaid Era instrumentals. Jase also released his self titled Beathedz Vol. 1 on Obese in 2005, the release featured a host of Aussie Hip hop’s elite at the time, including Hau, Hyjak N Torcha and Muph. From time to time we will showcase the equipment used by most of the Beatbay producers. This month we do a quick review on the Akai MPC Live II. A relative new-comer to the MPC family – the Live II was released in 2020 as the successor to the MPC One. Once again, Akai has completely redefined the portable sampler workstation. The MPC Live II offers everything its predecessor had, plus a built-in stereo speaker system, CV/gate outputs, and a cache of user-requested features.
Portability
This ultra-portable, battery-powered workstation boasts a 7-inch multitouch display, which complements 16 velocity-/pressure-sensitive pads and an array of streamlined controls. The MPC Live II runs the MPC 2.0 software platform for completely standalone operation, but you can also connect it to your computer, and thanks to MIDI Multi capability, it can easily become the centerpiece of your MIDI-based studio. You also get 16GB of internal storage, plus external hard drive support, a full-size SD card slot, and USB-A 3.0 slots for thumb drives. Complete with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, along with Splice and Ableton Live integration, the MPC Live II is Akai’s most powerful portable music production center yet.
MIDI Multi Capability
New to Akai Professional’s standalone series is MIDI Multi capability. Transforming your MPC into the ultimate MIDI sequencing studio centerpiece that allows you to simultaneously connect and route all the MIDI gear in your studio. Including class-compliant USB keyboards, MIDI interfaces, and USB to CV modules and giving you, even more, I/O capability.
Storage
Sporting 16GB of internal storage, the MPC Live II offers you plenty of space for your sample collection. If you’re a sample hoarder, then you’ll appreciate being able to hook up any hard drive (HDDs and SSDs) via the 2.5″ SATA drive connector, or to plug an SD card or USB flash drive directly into the MPC Live II and only load up a few extra GB of samples.
It is the Beat Maker Essential – Standalone MPC, sampler, drum machine and MIDI controller (for the included MPC Software – Mac / PC) with the powerful MutiCore System from the MPC One and MPC X.

On producer spotlight this month we feature Piers One.
Piers One is a Brisbane based beat maker. With Able 2, he released his debut instrumental EP “Above Alibi” early in 2020 on Rinsed Out Records. The limited edition vinyl sold out quickly and cemented “Above Alibi” as an exceptional release. It gives a nod to the golden era of classic boom bap beats, with their own flavours added to the mix.
Involved in the hip hop scene since the early 2000’s as an emcee and producer. Piers One was part of RIPE Crew playing shows in Brisbane, the Gold and Sunshine Coasts.
After taking a break from music, Piers moved to London in 2011. Returning to Brisbane in 2013, and after setting up his new studio, he has been quietly working on his craft since. 2021 looks set to be a busy year with more releases on Rinsed Out Records due.
Influences include Brothers Stoney, DJ Muggs, The Alchemist and The Avalanches.
Follow the below to buy a physical copy of “Above Alibi” and check out Piers One’s beats in his Beatbay store.
Look out for upcoming releases from Piers One including the “Visions” EP (available on all digital platforms) and a beat tape (limited edition cassette release).
Head Honcho and Beat Baron of Melbourne label GRHYME Productions. Royalz is not new to the block. Starting with the production of Sinergy Crew’s mixtape in 2005; Royalz has been busy behind the boards producing beats for labelmates and friends for over a decade. His Man Vs Maschine mixtape trilogy saw him remixing some of Australia’s finest and most respected emcees. He has also contributed beats to One Sixth’s Outbox EP as well as 2nd Thought’s Willy Dynamo – Dynamic releases. 2018 saw Royalz release his long awaited debut production album featuring New York and Australia’s top tier emcees, including Roc Marciano, Conway, SmooVth, Tornts, Bigfoot and many many more.
In 2020 the Ty Farris x Royalz release “The Road of a Warrior” received international acclaim and placed Ty Farris as a top tier emcee while Royalz delivered a perfect aural canvas.
